To Read is To Travel – it’s Bookshop Day in Spain

Bookshops all over Spain are celebrating Dia de Las Librerias today with all sorts of events, including talks, signings, readings, competitions, film screenings and lots of activities for children. Shops are offering a 5% discount on all books and are staying open until 10 pm.

This year’s slogan is Leer es Viajar – to Read is to Travel. A book can take you anywhere without moving from your chair.

If you are in Malaga, take part in their Bookcrossing event by just leaving a book somewhere in the city for someone else to find.  Writers are taking over shops all over Spain as part of the Bookseller for a Day events. Antonio Muñoz Molina will be behind the counter at Tipos Ínfames in Madrid from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm this evening, advising customers on what to read and talking about is own work. In Oviedo, Ian Gibson is signing his latest book Poeta en Granada in the Libreria Cervantes.

Organised by Cegal, the Spanish Booksellers’ Confederation, the event started in 2010 and is getting bigger every year. Just have a look at all the activities around the country to find something going on near you.
